Summing it up for Microsoft's development upgrade path


Here's a comment that I found on a post at SQL Server Central (http://www.sqlservercentral.com). This was one of the responses to an article on SQL Server, entitled: "Is It Worth Upgrading to SQL Server 2008" and it expressed my own feelings for me so succinctly that it deserved a mention.

Gordon Brown visits Wakefield - photo opportunity


I was looking at the Downing Street web site (http://www.number10.gov.uk) today.

Under the heading "Around the Web" I found a link to this Flickr page:-

I think this is a pretty "muscular politics" picture - or maybe is it just plain aggressive? I think Gordon Brown is saying something like, "See you, Jimmy!"

The fellow to Gordon Brown's right looks kind of handy... He seems to be addressing the lady behind them both in a way which has taken her back. It's like he's challenging her - "What are you lookin' at?!"

I also think the shop frontage in the background is poignant: I see a branch of the ill-fated Bradford and Bingley - one of the banks that got flattenned in the aftermath of the credit crunch, following the many year's of Gordon's "No More Boom and Bust" economic stewardship. Perhaps this was the cause of the less-than-at-ease atmosphere that I detect in the photograph.

Barclaycard mystery

'Space cheese' returns to earth.


I love this. It's so totally pointless.

Another great article brought to us by MSN tells of the fate of a lump of rocket-powered cheese.

I find it amusing that the cheese (old technology) survived the trip while the GPS and onboard camera failed.




'Space cheese' returns to earth.

A lump of cheese fired into space has been found in a garden in Buckinghamshire.

The 300g block of cheddar was attached to a weather balloon and launched into the upper atmosphere from Pewsey in Wiltshire on Tuesday, as part of the moon landing anniversary celebrations.

It drifted up to the edge of space at 18.6 miles (30km) above sea level, where it was hoped the 1.6m-wide helium balloon would burst and return its smelly cargo to earth.

Organisers of the stunt had been worried as to the cheese's whereabouts after the balloon's GPS system broke down soon after launch.

The cheese was thought lost until a resident of Cressex found it in their garden and took it to High Wycombe police station on Wednesday night. The interstellar fromage was still in one piece but the flight-recording camera attached to the weather balloon had failed.

Dom Lane, of Shepton Mallet's West Country Farmhouse Cheesemakers group told the BBC: "I am driving back from High Wycombe with the cheese now. I may try a bit to see if it has matured at high altitude and then it will probably go into a glass case at our production offices."

Illiterate Britain


I'm chuffed to find that MSN and their friends have done the hard work and gathered together a bunch of examples of irritating language gaffs.

As another case of bad grammar on a road sign makes the headlines, MSN presents a

gallery

of the very worst examples of publicly-aired lazy punctuation and lousy spelling.

The one that bugs me - and it's not in the list - is the sign over some checkout tills at the supermarket that reads:-

10 items or less
