El Primer Dia del Resto de Mi Vida - by La Oreja de Van Gogh

Okay - so the band's name translates to "The ear of Van Gogh". However...

I have not studied the English translation of this song, but it has to be a great tonic for the end of the week, which is officially occurring as I write.

And that Spanish female vocal is just the best sound.

Katy Perry is great. Great looking gal and fun pop songs and all that. But this girl, Andie Case and her boys do an amazing re-interpretation of the song that makes it more interesting and gives it some weight. The fact that she's extremely easy on the eyes does her her no harm, obviously, but I think she actually makes the song sound more like a proper song, rather than a slightly over-the-top bubble-gum pop anthem.

See what you think.

How much feeling can a man pack into a song? More than I thought possible.

Earlier I went looking for this song on my own blog here and failed to find it. Well surprised at meself, since it's a cracking ditty. Actually a lovely song that no-one knows about. So... here it is... a song that seems to wistfully celebrate personal isolation.

Lyrics:

High above the push and shove
I float without a sound
Paradise found
I can see a lilac field
A blue and crimson sky
How lucky am I

And sunlight makes it alright
Makes me shine
I watch you watching
Miss you
Doing fine

But even though the view is ours
The pleasure is all mine
Living on cloud nine

High above a crowded street
A little bird of prey
Sings have a nice day
I can hear the falling rain
The crushing ocean wave
And Dagenham Dave

And music makes me lose it
Makes me shine
When he sings
Oh my darling, Clementine

But even though the song is ours
The pleasure is all mine
Living on cloud nine

I own my world
I own my world
And all that's in it
As far as I can see

I own my world
I own my world
And all that's in it
It all belongs to me

I would love to share my love with you
But you don't see this beauty like I do

And even though the world is ours
The pleasure is all mine
Living on cloud
Get off my cloud nine
Get off my cloud nine
Get off my cloud nine

Finally I have found a copy of this song online - "Let Me Count The Ways" by Steve Hackett from his 1980s album, Till We have faces.

I fell in love with this piece way back in the 1980s - basically when the album was released. I had it on cassette tape. Being a slow learner, I took ages to realise that one of the things that made it unusual was that it is in 3/4 time. Duh. Steve Hackett's ability to make his guitar sing in an organic fashion is shown off in spades on this track. His tone is rich and fat and warm. And his phrasing is like singing.
